Frequently asked questions

Is the Croatian vocabulary game free?

Yes. The game is completely free, with no sign-up and no account. Your miles and the words you got wrong are saved in your own browser.

What level is it for?

It is made for B1 (intermediate) learners of Croatian. If you are at A2, it is a good challenge, and the A2 exercises are a gentler start; at B2, it works as a quick review.

How does the voyage from Rijeka to Dubrovnik work?

Each correct answer moves your boat 1 or 2 miles. In most exercises you get 2 miles from the third correct answer in a row; each memory pair is worth 2 miles, and each unscrambled word 2 miles, or 1 if you use a hint. A round only counts if you make no mistakes (wrong memory pairs don't count as mistakes); otherwise the boat sails back to the last port. About six perfect rounds take you all the way to Dubrovnik.

Why does the game show gender and plural?

Every Croatian noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, and adjectives and past tense forms change with it: on je išao (he went), ona je išla (she went). That is why each noun shows its gender and plural, and each verb its present and past forms.

Who made the game?

Marina Toto, a native Croatian tutor from Kastav near Rijeka. She teaches 1-on-1 online Croatian lessons in English and German at Salt & Syntax.
